Day 2 - Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Admired for its picturesque bridges, wonderful tree-lined canals, and historic gabled houses, Amsterdam is not only the grand Dutch capital, but an amazing city rich with history, art and spectacular architecture. At any time of the year, the idyllic streets are exquisitely charming, but during the Christmas season they look even more magical with the twinkle of lights reflecting off the tranquil canal waters, and decorations including nativity scenes and the brightly-illuminated tree in the heart of Dam Square. The Dutch festive season begins from 14th November; and on the eve of 5th December children place their boots around the fireplace to be filled with sweets by Saint Nicholas. You have a full day to enjoy the merry atmosphere of the Museumplein, a park surrounded by the city’s renowned museums, which is transformed into a Christmas village with a magnificent ice rink and delightful stalls selling hot drinks, traditional Dutch street food such as a stroopwafel, hand-made crafts, and beautiful seasonal decorations.
Day 3 - Hamburg, Germany
We arrive in historic Hamburg around midday for a free afternoon to discover this city. Having joined the Hanseatic League during the Middle Ages, Hamburg boasts an abundance of architectural masterpieces, many of which can be found in the UNESCO-listed Kontorhaud District, including the St Nikolai Memorial, the former church destroyed during air raids in 1943. Explore Hamburg dressed up for the festive season, with thousands of decorative lights brightening the dark winter nights, the scent of roasted almonds, and fairy lights illuminating elegant wooden stalls in the delightful Christmas markets. Wander the market stalls enriched with tasty delicacies, beautifully-detailed handmade crafts and superb art - a pleasant way to experience the winter joy and prepare for the seasonal celebrations ahead.
