Enchanting Tour of Portugal with an Iberian Cruise

We Love

Visiting the brightly painted palace at Sintra, high on a wooded hill with gorgeous views, stretching to the ocean. Taking advantage of our ship’s smaller size, to sail up the beautiful Guadalquivir river into the heart of Seville for an overnight stay.

Summary

Beginning in a historic pousada just outside Porto, we’ll experience the Port wine city before heading to Lisbon, one of the world’s oldest and most charismatic destinations. Whilst here, we’ll take in the city itself and head out to beautiful Sintra. Then our cruise adventure starts, as we join a Lisbon to Barcelona cruise aboard Azamara Quest®. We’ll visit a vibrant collection of Spain’s coastal cities and our ship is small and elegant enough to reach the very heart of Seville, before British Gibraltar, Málaga, historic Cartagena, and Valencia, with a Barcelona finale.

    Porto

From our lovely surroundings, we’ll head into Porto for a full day’s sightseeing tour of this stunning city. Its UNESCO-protected Old Town and attractive bridges that span the Douro river, make it a charming place to explore. As the city that gave the world Port wine, we’ll of course make a stop at the World of Wine - an experience filled with a district of museums, restaurants and a wine school.

We’ll enjoy a wine tasting here, before heading back to our pousada to relax in its landscaped gardens. This evening you may like to wander into historic Guimarães.

    • City tour of Porto, including wine tasting at the World of Wine experience (all day)

    Pousada Mosteiro Guimarães (4-star)

  • Day 3

    Coimbra - Lisbon

We’ll head south this morning for the culture-filled city of Lisbon. On the way, we’ll make a lunch stop in the university town of Coimbra.

    Pestana CR7, Lisbon (4-star)

  • Day 4

    Lisbon

We’ll explore Lisbon this morning on a walking tour. It’s one of the oldest cities in the world, with rich architecture and grand monuments lining wide boulevards and squares. We’ll amble through the city, stopping along the way to taste the local liqueur, Ginjinha, made from Ginja berries (sour cherries) blended with sugar and a variety of additions including cinnamon sticks.

The afternoon is free to explore the city’s best bits at your own pace. In the Old Town, traditional trams clatter through the winding streets and shop fronts are decorated with intricate tiles. Or you could make your way to the UNESCO-protected Torre de Belém, one of the most famous monuments in Portugal. If you’re feeling peckish, we suggest trying pasteis de nata - delicious Portuguese custard tarts best served with a sprinkling of cinnamon and icing sugar.

    • Walking tour of Lisbon, including local cherry liqueur ‘Ginjinha’ tasting (morning)

    Pestana CR7, Lisbon (4-star)

  • Day 5

    Sintra

The fairytale town of Sintra, where Lord Byron spent much of his youth, is our destination today. You’ll get the best view of this UNESCO-listed wonder, from the looming hilltop Pena Palace - an uninterrupted outlook over the thick forests, exotic gardens and the town’s winding streets below. It’s a collection of onion domes in bright blues, pinks and yellows - and it’s a wonder to explore. If time allows, we’ll make stops in the coastal towns of Estoril and Cascais too.

    • Excursion to UNESCO-listed Sintra, including Sintra National Palace (all day)

    Pestana CR7, Lisbon (4-star)

  • Day 6

    Day 6 - Lisbon

After a free morning, we’ll transfer to the port where we embark our ship before departing this afternoon on our Iberian Peninsula cruise.

    Azamara Quest® (5-star)

  • Day 7 8

Days 7-8 - Seville, Spain (overnight)

Our ship is small enough to navigate the Guadalquivir river and today is spent relaxing on board enjoying the facilities, until we arrive on the evening of day 7 in the sublime city of Seville. We’ll dock overnight ready for a full day to explore on day 8.

The city of Seville is credited with the invention of tapas - if you’re feeling hungry, you could spend your day moving from bar to bar as the locals do, making an entire meal out of the tapas experience. Maybe visit the exquisitely decorated Moorish style Alcázar, the city’s royal palace with themed gardens laid out in terraces. Or simply stroll along the river’s banks taking in the city’s relaxed atmosphere.

    Azamara Quest® (5-star)

  • Day 9

    Day 9 - Gibraltar, UK

Overlooking the mouth of the Mediterranean from a height of 1,400 feet, you’ll spot the towering Rock of Gibraltar long before we dock. A blend of British, Spanish and Moorish cultures, you’ll find reminders of home sporadically throughout the city, such as red post and phone boxes, M&S and classic fish-and-chip shops. Take the cable car to the top of the Rock (or walk it if you’re feeling energetic!), from where you can see Africa to the south and Spain to the north, as well as a bird’s-eye of the rest of Gibraltar. A little way up the Rock is St Michael’s Cave - a fascinating and beautiful system long believed to be bottomless. Watch out for Gibraltar’s infamous macaques, who often hang around this area looking for food.

    Azamara Quest® (5-star)

  • Day 10

    Day 10 - Málaga

Spain. Perched on Andalucia’s sun-drenched Mediterranean coast, Málaga boasts seemingly endless stretches of golden-sand beaches, traditional tapas restaurants and lively local flair. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find the city is like a beautiful work of art - it’s no surprise considering it was the birthplace of Picasso.

There’s a museum to explore, proudly displaying the work of their most famous ‘son’. If art isn’t your interest, there’s the city’s Alcazaba, an 11th-century citadel home to three palaces, beautiful gardens, and opulent fountains.

    Azamara Quest® (5-star)

  • Day 11

    Day 11 - Cartagena

Steeped in over 2,000 years of history, this Spanish port city was built on a settlement site established by a Carthaginian general. More recently recognised as the ‘Port of Cultures’, there’s plenty to explore. Maybe begin at the Naval Museum, then set out to see everything from Roman ruins right up to modern creations inspired by Gaudi.

    Azamara Quest® (5-star)

  • Day 12

    Day 12 - Valencia

The charming Spanish city of Valencia is the perfect place to wander. The beautiful centre and atmospheric old town enjoy a mix of historic monuments, modern architecture, museums, and art galleries to visit. Or you can simply do as the locals do and head to the beach to enjoy the sunshine.

    Azamara Quest® (5-star)

  • Day 13

    Day 13 - Barcelona (overnight)

We arrive this morning in Spain’s second city, the cosmopolitan masterpiece of Barcelona, awash with heritage and Catalan spirit. There’s something new at every turn, including astounding architecture, relaxing parks and beaches, the famous Las Ramblas boulevard, and treasures from its Roman and medieval past. There’s an incredible array of UNESCO-listed buildings, including La Sagrada Familia - the city’s Gaudi-designed Roman Catholic church. We’ll dock overnight.
