Day 1 - London - Prague - Decin - Bad Schandau
Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home, for your journey to London Heathrow Airport and a direct, scheduled British Airways flight to Prague. On arrival, we transfer to the port in Decin and embark MS Johannes Brahms (3T+) with time to settle in as we set sail. Enjoy the passing scenery as you sip on a welcome drink, take dinner, and enjoy an evening on board. We dock overnight in Bad Schandau.
Day 2 - Bad Schandau - Dresden
Enjoy a relaxed morning, settling into life on the river as we sail to Dresden, through picturesque scenes of the Elbe Valley and the impressive Elbe Sandstone Mountains. Docking in Dresden around midday, we take an included tour of the city after lunch. Despite most of the city’s architectural treasures being levelled by bombs in WWII, their contents were safely stored and many of the wonderful landmarks have been painstakingly restored to their former glory, including the spectacular Frauenkirche, one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Europe, with a striking alter reassembled from nearly 2,000 fragments. We also see Zwinger Palace, primarily a lavish royal party palace, and the grand Semper Opera House, which hosted premiers of famous works by Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner. The Royal Palace will also be viewed, a wonderful neo-renaissance building that has been rebuilt several times, the last completed in 2013 allowing it to display countless treasures to the public again. We remain in port overnight.
Day 3 - Dresden - Meissen
We arrive in Meissen mid-morning and visit Colditz Castle, the infamous WWII Prisoner of War camp which set the scene for some of the most ingenious and dramatic prison breaks. Holding officers of multiple nationalities within its supposedly impenetrable walls, there grew a healthy rivalry between troops for the highest number of successful escapes, several of which were impressive enough to become story lines in many books, films and games. The castle stood since the 11th century as a watch tower and, through several reconstructions, found new roles as a workhouse, a home, a mental institution for Germany’s wealthy and even once held one of Europe’s largest zoos in its grounds. There are many stories to learn of the castle’s voluntary and involuntary residents on your tour today.
Day 4 - Meissen - Wittenberg
Early this morning our journey continues to Wittenberg. Our afternoon is spent at Schloss Oranienbaum, an impressive palace and example of Dutch Baroque architecture in Germany; and the entire town was built in this style, geometrically aligned for maximum impact. The adjoining landscape includes the 18th century Anglo-Chinese Garden, considered the only one of its kind in Europe, complete with a five-story pagoda and Tea House. We return to our vessel in Wittenberg, where we remain overnight.
Day 5 - Wittenberg - Dessau
This morning we make our final journey to Dessau, where you have an afternoon at leisure to explore the town which holds the most influential design school of the 20th century. Bauhaus was particularly prominent in the 1920s, and many of the UNESCO-listed buildings developed at this time offer a stark contrast to the nearby Baroque landmarks. Dessau was also the birthplace of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, and an exhibition details the achievements of ‘the Jewish Socrates’.
Day 6 Dessau - Berlin - London
Disembark MS Johannes Brahms and transfer to Berlin Airport for a direct, scheduled British Airways flight to London Heathrow Airport. On arrival you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
