Day 3 - Christmas Eve - At sea
Day 4 - Christmas Day - At sea
Forget about the usual stresses and strains of Christmas as you relax and enjoy delicious food, festivity and fantastic entertainment aboard Balmoral.
Day 5 - 6 - Boxing Day - Funchal, Madeira (overnight)
We reach Madeira at lunchtime, and sail into the capital’s port, where we remain docked until late afternoon on day 6. This allows you plenty of time to enjoy Funchal’s old-world charm, glowing under thousands of colourful Christmas lights, and gardens that benefit from the subtropical climate. In the harbour you’ll find the 17th century São Tiago Fortress, now a Contemporary Art Museum, and world-renowned Madeiran wine cellars. You’ll also have time to take an excursion to explore the rest of Madeira.
Day 7 - Santa Cruz, La Palma
La Palma’s small, pretty capital city is one of the Canary Island’s true gems. Santa Cruz de La Palma was a key trading post between Spain and the Americas. Stunning palaces and sumptuous merchants’ houses butt up against the grand town hall. The Naval Museum is a replica of Christopher Columbus' 15th century Santa Maria sailing ship. Will it be warm enough to enjoy the beach in December?
Day 8 - San Sebastian, La Gomera
Christopher Columbus is also linked to the small island of La Gomera. Many of San Sebastian’s buildings and monuments are linked to him, including the Casa de la Agunada and the Casa de Colon where, according to legend, Columbus stayed during his time on the island. Enjoy a city of perfectly preserved historic buildings, beautiful natural parks and typically Canarian beaches of soft sand.
Day 9 - Las Palmas, Gran Canaria
Las Palmas is the largest city in the Canary Islands, founded over 500 years ago. In front of the unusual Santa Ana Cathedral stand bronze dogs that represent the canines which the Romans named the islands after. Today, the city boasts sightseeing (including the Christopher Columbus House Museum) and shopping opportunities, and one of the world’s best beaches.
Day 10 - New Year’s Eve - Santa Cruz, Tenerife
Tenerife's capital is built around boulevards and wide avenues that link elegant squares and parks - the perfect space to throw a street party on New Year’s Eve! You have the entire day to enjoy an excursion to the exotic Botanical Gardens or the mystical lava stone Pyramids of Guimar. If you’re missing snowy scenes, explore volcanic El Teide National Park and climb Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak. And you’ll still have time to explore the main city as it prepares for an evening of celebrations. We remain in port until the early hours, so you can enjoy the firework displays launched from the main squares.
Day 11 - 12 - New Year’s Day - At sea
Day 13 - Lisbon, Portugal
We break our journey home with a day in Portugal’s capital. Cobbled alleyways and steep roads barred by rails for rattling yellow trams wind their way to ancient ruins and white-domed cathedrals. There are plenty of museums to pass the time, including the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Coach Museum and the Carmo Archaeological Museum. And plenty of shops, from Campo de Santa Clara flea market to the upmarket Avenidas Novas.
Day 14 - 15 - At sea
