Great Wall of China

We’ll pay a visit to China’s most famous sight today - the Great Wall. We’ll visit the Badaling Great Wall, a section dating back to the Ming Dynasty, set at the highest point of the Guan’gou gorge.

This afternoon we’ll continue to the site of the Ming Tombs, where we walk along the Sacred Way, lined with animal and human statues, to the mausoleum of Changling. It was widely believed that a person’s soul remained after death, and for this reason Emperor Zhu Di’s tomb complexes appear like a palace.

This evening we’ll get a real taste of China, as we dine in one of the city’s famed Peking duck restaurants.

The Forbidden City is the world’s largest palace complex, home to the Ming and Qing emperors for over 500 years. Today it’s one of Beijing’s most impressive sights, housing numerous rare treasures and intricate architecture. Also known as the Palace Museum, it sits at the north end of Tian’anmen Square.

Our tour will cover some of the many palaces and gates - look out for the yellow glazed tiles on the roofs, the symbol of the royal family. This afternoon is free to explore, do some shopping or relax.

Day 6 Xi’an - Terracotta Warriors

Xi’an - Terracotta Warriors

The incredible Terracotta Warriors, one of the most significant and sensational archaeological excavations of the 20th century, are first on our agenda today. Emperor Qin Shi Huang commissioned his mausoleum in 246 BC, and as excavation work continues in the area it’s speculated that even more treasures are yet to be uncovered. The life-size warriors and horses, each individually crafted, are arranged in battle formation, and guard the mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. Altogether there are more than 7,000 pieces.

We’ll also visit the Big Wild Goose pagoda today. A simple yet appealing construction and a holy place for Buddhists, the pagoda stands nearly 65 metres in height and affords panoramic views over the city for those energetic enough to climb to the top.

  • Excursion to see the Terracotta Warriors and the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (all day)

Day 7 Xi’an - Nanjing

Xi’an - Nanjing

Today, we’ll fly to Nanjing, which has been one of the most important cities in China for the past 2,000 years. Our tour of the city includes a visit to the Mausoleum of Dr Sun Yat-sen, the ‘father of the nation’ who played an important role in China’s development in the early 20th century. We also view the Zhonghua Gate, built in the mid-14th century, during the reign of the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty who made Nanjing the capital.
