Best of Brisbane

While it is less well known than other Australian cities, Brisbane should be on the itinerary of every traveller wishing to experience the natural beauty, wildlife and unique culture of Australia. Filled with memorable sights and sounds, Brisbane has so much to offer, with a wide range of attractions offering exciting insights into what makes Australia such a thrilling country with a unique character.

Located 27 miles east of Brisbane on North Stradbroke Island, Blue Lake National Park is named in true Australian fashion - for the crystal clear beauty of Blue Lake. The lake is home to the huge round-bodied Southern Sunfish, which frequently rises to the surface to bask in the sun, an amazing sight to behold. First formed thousands of years ago, the lake and surrounding swamps are home to a diverse range of wildlife, making it the ideal spot to snap some fantastic photographs. Enjoy a trek through the arresting scenery before settling down to a refreshing picnic by the lakeside.

A magnificent mix of natural beauty and modern architecture, The Parklands is a stunning locale situated on the South Bank by the only inner-city beach in Australia. You can stroll through the astonishing bougainvillea-covered Arbour, gasp at panoramic city views from the towering Wheel of Brisbane and delight in alfresco dining with a glass of wine, before seeing a range of performance arts at the bustling Courier-Mail Piazza. If you’re there at the right time, you might catch one of the city’s many different markets on the South Bank, and bag yourself a wonderful piece of aboriginal art.

If you want to shelter from the sun (or rain) for a moment, Queensland Museum holds collections on the state’s past, from war to wildlife, while the Commissariat Store Museum focuses on Queensland’s colonisation with themes like crime and convicts.

For a tranquil day in invigorating surroundings, take a stroll round and enjoy a picnic at the magnificent Brisbane Botanical Gardens Mount Coot-tha, Queensland’s famous subtropical parklands. The lush gardens of exotic plants cover 25 hectares and includes the world’s largest collection of native Australian rainforest trees. The Brisbane Botanical Gardens Mount Coot-tha is the perfect place to visit for a peaceful day in paradise.

With more than 130 koalas, the 4.6 hectare Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is located in beautifully scenic surroundings by the Brisbane River. Here you can enjoy getting up close and personal with the friendly koalas, before observing other interesting species such as the playful platypus and the beautiful albino dingo. Take a walk on the wild side at this magnificent nature reserve committed to conservation.
