A coastal view in Tsitsikamma National Park, along South Africa's Garden Route
11 June, 20192 minute read

Discover the Garden Route, South Africa

Along the south eastern coast of Africa stretches a verdant mix of forests and wetlands with stunningly scenic lakes and lagoons. The Garden Route is an ideal introduction to the unique culture and character of South Africa, famed throughout the world for its variety of breathtaking natural wonders, rich diversity of flora and fauna, and fabulous cities and historical landmarks.

Tsitsikamma National Park

Tsitsikamma National Park is one of the most popular highlights of the Garden Route. Its unspoilt rugged coastline, mighty Storms River, plunging waterfalls and forests filled with majestic Outeniqua Yellowwood trees make hikes along the magnificent Otter Trail an unforgettable experience. Be sure to visit Strandloper Cave and take the opportunity to snap some magical photographs from the suspension bridge.

Knysna

Knysna is one of the stunning towns along the Garden Route, featured in our Sensational South Africa tour. The beautiful natural harbour never ceases to astonish visitors. Once used as a key port to export timber, Knysna Quays is now the perfect place to savour some of the finest seafood while watching boats sailing across the lagoon. Titan travellers can also visit the fabulous Featherbed Nature Reserve, where birds and small mammals flourish amongst indigenous forests. Visitors are treated to a cruise on the Knysna Lagoon by the Knysna Heads, a spectacular landmark along the coast. You might be lucky enough to spot brightly coloured lories, dolphins and migrating whales.

George

George is a another charming town located on a 10 km plateau with the Outeniqua Mountains to the north and the Indian Ocean to the south. Travellers love exploring the tranquil streets of George, soaking up the sun and atmosphere, before paying a visit to the iconic Slave Tree, an ancient English Oak planted by Landdrost Van Kervel in the 19th century, which has a large lock and chain embedded in its trunk and has been declared a national monument.

Famous for having the world’s largest ostrich population, the town of Oudtshoorn and the surrounding area have an abundance of attractions. The limestone formations of the Cango Caves are a thrilling spectacle to behold. Remember to pick up a bottle or two of the wine produced in the area - it’s amongst the finest in South Africa.
