Facts About the Grand Canyon
It is believed that the Grand Canyon was carved out by the fast waters of the 277 mile long Colorado River over thousands of years. It is an amazing natural phenomenon comprised of a large crevice, that is 1 mile deep, and two rims, the North and South, that are averaging 10 miles apart from one another. Now protected as a national park, the Grand Canyon was once a site of dispute between the Native American resistance and the 19th Century miners who were out to exploit the beautiful landscape for its rich natural properties. Luckily, in 1893 Frederic Jackson Turner put an end to the American Frontier which in turn made the Grand Canyon one of the most iconic must see natural wonders in the USA.
Will the Great Barrier Reef be around for much longer?
The Great Barrier Reef, Situated on the North Eastern side of Australia, is the World’s largest coral reef and it is known as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. The reef system is made up of 3000 different species of coral and an abundance magnificent marine wildlife not seen anywhere else. Unfortunately, due to global warming causing bleaching of the corals, the Crown of Thorns starfish (corals natural predator) eating the reef and pollution created by uncontrolled human activity in our oceans, this habitat is rapidly dying. Since 2003 the Reef Quality Protection Reef Plan was devised, formed by the Australian government as well as local communities and industries, to aid in protecting the reef and maintaining its biodiversity. If the death of coral species in the Great Barrier Reef carries on at the same rate, this colourful extraordinary ocean environment will not be around for much longer.
