The Best Tour Managers in the Business

                Tour Managers

One of the undoubted stars of any Titan holiday is the tour manager. Professional and knowledgeable, with years of on-the-road experience, the tour manager is on hand 24 hours a day. Most travel with the group from the UK.

As well as making the ‘fine detail’ daily arrangements Titan tour managers also provide an introductory guiding service, informed by their own travels, and they can help with any individual requests. On the rare occasions where there are issues with the itinerary – delayed flights or adverse weather conditions, for example – the tour manager is there to resolve them swiftly, preserving perfectly your holiday peace of mind.

Our tour managers are consistently recognised as the best in the business – they are so treasured that our travellers have been know to choose their itinerary purely on the basis of the tour manager!

Award-winning tour manager Robin Giles says: “One Titan holidaymaker wrote a poem about me called ‘An Ode to Robin’ that she shared with the whole group. The closing lines were: ‘Always calm and with a smile on your face / solving problems with charm and good grace / so we thank you for giving us pleasure / and memories to treasure forever’. That summed up the job of the tour manager rather well, I thought…”

    Mags CurwoodWho am I?

I am one of Titan's Tour Managers and have worked in the travel industry for many years. Travel is a great passion of mine and is reflected in the tours that I take all around the world. I truly believe experiencing different cultures broadens the mind and brings people together. What better way to enrich your life?

    Favourite Titan Tour

Whichever Titan Tour I'm on is always my favourite tour, however I would have to say Japan, Thailand and Peru really stand out: they offer such vast cultural differences. My absolute favourite however has to be the Eastern Extravaganza covering the East Coast of Canada and the USA. It's such a marvellous tour with so many interesting places to see. Each time I take this tour there is always something new to experience.

    An Inspirational Travel Moment

I have been inspired so many times as a Tour Manager when I hear and see my clients reaction when they first lay eyes on Niagara Falls, or the Manhattan skyline at night to the Royal Palace in Bangkok, or one of the most beautiful Basilicas in the world - Basilica of Notre Dame in Montreal.

    Special Interests

I love people. It's that simple. I also love dogs and walking (a combination of the two is always nice!). Adding to the animal theme, Belted Galloway cows are also a favourite. Oh, and hats. A girl can never have too many hats!

Top Tips for Stress Free Touring

    1. Titan's door to door service.
    2. Pack according to the climate of your destination
    3. Comfortable shoes.
    4. If places of worship are on your itinerary, pack suitable clothing; a shawl or scarf is always useful.
    5. Pack your favourite chocolate/biscuits/tea bags

"So many Japanese here!" - In the Ginza district of Tokyo
"They seemed totally unable to understand a far more productive way to grow vegetables" - A Suffolk vegetable farmer frustrated at being unable to convince the people of Plymouth Plantation (17th century re-enactment village) of a better way to grow vegetables.

The Manhattan skyline at night and Niagara Falls consistently evokes the best reactions from my clients.

    Rob IngoldWho Am I?

Although I was born in London, my formative years were spent in a leafy village in Kent. My work background prior to the Tourist Industry was in Market Research. However due to an insatiable curiosity, my wanderlust led me to taking group tours which i have now been doing for over twenty five years. No matter how many times I escort a tour, there is always something new to explore, and more interesting people to meet. Titan's many diverse and fascinating tours mean I am always kept on my toes.

    Favourite Titan Tour

Having lived and worked in both Australia and New Zealand, I am always happy to visit those far-flung but somehow very familiar shores. The truly cosmopolitan cities of Australia, contrasting with the magnificent and rugged outback, or the Tropical North, never fail to impress me. And who could fail to fall in love with New Zealand's dramatic geography, or the friendliness of its people with their strong historic ties to Britain. In different ways both countries have so much to offer their visitors and prove to be worthy hosts.

    An Inspirational Travel Moment

Enabling a client with falling eyesight to fulfil a lifetime ambition of taking a flight over the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately an unheralded snowfall scuppered his chances and his disappointment was palpable. However from a different destination two days later we managed to get him a flight. His joy was inspirational.

    Special Interests

When architecture is good, whether old or new, quirky or grand, I find it very uplifting. It can really determine your opinion of a place, and brighten your mood. Likewise, gardening can be therapeutic. And languages can be challenging but always fun!

Top Tips for Stress Free Touring

    1. Expect the unexpected. It could turn out to be a bonus.
    2. Don't expect everything to be as it is at home. It is often much better.
    3. Be prepared for travel delays. Take a crossword book!
    4. Listen to others, but form your own opinions.

The power of nature and tigers of the Ranthambore National Park; the magical lands and palaces of the Maharajahs in Jaipur and Udaipur; the Ganges at dawn, one of the most spiritual and holy places on earth; the beauty of the Taj Mahal, built for love, along with Titan quality, beautiful landscape and Indian hospitality are the recipe for a perfect touring experience.

    An Inspirational Travel Moment

Whilst trekking at dawn in the Rain Forest, I watched the early morning mist clear and the sun rise over earth's largest trees. The jungle awoke; the sounds of nature came alive. Hundreds of species of animal making such a deafening noise made me realise the power of nature.

    Who Am I?

Growing up in the countryside, every time my parents would take me to the coast I would always look at the horizon and wonder what lay the other side. This I believe is what gave me the desire to travel whenever I had the opportunity. I have been working in Travel and Tourism for more than twenty six years. Which has taken me from Managing the Greek Islands and Thailand working for holiday operators to becoming a Tour Manager and working on Escorted Tours. Since then my travels have taken me from basically Alaska to the end of the World via The Americas and covering most of Asia. To me, I think it is a wonderful thing being able to explore the planet we live on, and travelling with likeminded guests, taking on these experiences just adds to the satisfaction of being a Tour Manager and sharing some fun and jokes along the way.

    Favourite Titan Tour

Unfortunately I don't have one favourite Titan tour. There are so many different places to visit. California and The Golden West has to be a major one because there is so much there to see, every day a different city or state which changes so much. From cities to National Parks, yet in contrast. My love for Asia and South America never seems to leave me though. Whether travelling through ChinaThailand or Malaysia all seem to take on a new form every time I travel to these cultures. However my heart still lies in Spain.

    An Inspirational Travel Moment

Watching the turtles lying eggs on the beach in Costa Rica or seeing the penguins protecting their eggs in Patagonia, catching the bears taking their salmon lunch in Alaska and interacting with the Pandas on the mountain side in China. But the best I have ever seen has to be the way of life in the Amazon Rain Forest.

    Special Interests

Firstly has to be travelling, discovering different cultures and experiencing wildlife. I have a huge interest in photography having taken it at O and A Level. Always recording tours and travels, documenting places where I have visited. Ready for those travel guides I keep promising myself I will complete of my experiences. Yoga and Ti Chi helps me to keep a clear head when on the road. I also enjoy reading and painting whenever I get the chance.

Top Tips for Stress Free Touring

    2. Carry any medication, always in your hand baggage.
    3. Take your multivitamins as some destinations have different foods, humidity and altitudes. Give yourself a boost!
    4. Keep your mouth closed in the shower so as not to drink any of the water in certain countries.
    5. Keep your stomach warm as not to catch a chill in high humidity places.

Whilst on a Virgin flight, one of the passengers asked where I went every time I got up. I replied "up to the roof garden terrace". Before landing the passenger got up from her seat, when the cabin attendant asked her to return to her seat for landing she asked him if it would be possible to view the roof garden terrace before landing. The cabin attendant looked a little amazed and replied that it was a little cold to venture outside at the moment!

Helicopter flights over the Grand Canyon have to be one of the first. When the clients return they are like space cadets! A close second has to be the Igazu Water Falls in South America. Mainly I think it is the vast spaces that take their breath away and both being a natural wonder, very impressive.

The girl with a name no one can pronounce, that always reminds her guests of their daughters, granddaughters or nieces! A born and bred Essex Girl whose mother made her take elocution lessons and aspire to more than the lights of South End. I graduated in Spanish and Italian, worked on an American Summer Camp and then went off to Kibbutz in Israel for 9 months. After this I got itchy feet and joined a travel company with the hope of seeing far flung places. I was dully posted in Mallorca.

After much cajoling on my part, I got transferred to their worldwide department and literally got posted from pillar to post. Each continent for not much more than 6 months at a time. Did they not like my perfume? I decided to return to normality in 1995 but only survived my desk job for 4 months before the ache of adventure set in! Since then, I have become a Tour Manager specializing in tours of ChinaCentral and South America.

The Highlights of Argentina with Rio. All my favourite places combined into one completely amazing tour. I am a Latin girl at heart and adore the colour and vibrancy of Rio and the glamour sophistication of Buenos Aires. Always a city girl, I love to escape the madding crowds and you can't get more remote than El Calefate in Argentina. This tour takes you from the tropical splendour of Iguacu to the glaciers of Patagonia. Both sights will stay with me for the rest of my life.

    An Inspirational Travel Moment

So many! Flying over Everest and trekking with a group in the Himalayas. Climbing the highest mountain at Machu Picchu. Diving into crystal clear emerald green water in Brazil's Costa Verde, fishing for Piranhas in the Amazon, climbing the sand dunes in Namibia's desert and looking at the most amazing Milky Way with stars so close you could touch them. Watching a Tucan steal the eggs of the weaver birds at Iguacu and horse riding in the Pantanel.

    Special Interests

Primarily, I am a city girl who loves museums, galleries, theatre and cinema but in contrast to this, I love escaping the madding crowds by hiking, horse riding and anything involving flora and fauna. I quite like a good adventure and am fascinated by mountaineering and particularly Everest.

    Who Am I?

Born in Bristol but spent a large part of my childhood in Holland when my father accepted a job working for the Dutch Rugby Union. I have two sisters, Lisa and my twin sister Simone. Being rather shy as a youngster, I once allowed my twin to be interviewed for a Saturday job. She got the job and I turned up for work! The move to Holland gave me the travel bug from early on and I soon realised I wanted a career in the Travel Business. Geoff Huggin

    Geoff HugginWho Am I?

On leaving school after taking my A levels I went into banking. I quickly realised that this wasn’t a career for me or my personality. After a short period of doing other jobs I found a position working with one of the top travel companies in the UK. Once I had a taste for the travel profession it was in my blood. I now have over 30 year's experience working in the travel industry as well as a number of years running a successful small business and being a hotelier, (at one point all 3 at the same time). I now find myself in a very privileged position of being a tour manager for a Titan; this allows me to use my experience and extensive travel knowledge to ensure my clients have a very special holiday with a personal touch. I pride myself in doing very comprehensive research in to all the areas my clients visit so that they can appreciate the full experience of the many interesting and exotic places their journey takes them.

    Favourite Titan Tour

My favourite tours would be any of the combinations that Titan offers to India. Everything about India is amazing, it is so colourful, the hotels are amazing, the people are so friendly and the food is fantastic. It doesn't matter how many times I visit the Taj Mahal, I still get that feeling of amazement when I turn the corner and face one of the most incredible buildings in the world. When we travel to Ranthambore National Park to hopefully see the tigers, that incredible sight of a tiger when it comes out of the undergrowth and faces you, in all of its glory. I haven't done a tour yet when people find seeing the tiger such an experience that many have a tear in their eye, it is quite an emotional experience. Everyone must experience India; it has to be on everyone's list of places to visit.

    An Inspirational Travel Moment

Taking a Nile River Cruise and seeing all of the ancient cities, temples and artefacts were the most inspirational holiday I have ever experienced. The fact that you could see, feel and touch so much history was a momentous occasion. Having a very knowledgeable Egyptologist as a guide ensured that your imagination relived some of the events and culture of the time."

Seeing the city of Petra in Jordan comes a close second.

    Special Interests

My most special interest is travelling. I still have many wonderful places on my list to visit.  I still enjoy sport particularly badminton which I was chosen to play for the county at 15, a few years ago (quite a few). Fine dining with a good red wine. The company of my pet dog Molly who is part of the family.

Top Tips for Stress Free Touring

    1. Try to relax and let the tour manager deal with all the essentials
    2. Do your homework on the places you are going to visit to ensure you know what you want to get out of each location.
    3. Pack the right clothes for the places you are going to visit as some tours can experience very different climates.
    4. Be prepared to communicate with the other clients as this often leads to a better holiday experience.
    5. Don’t be afraid of asking the tour manager anything that may make your tour even more special

    Funniest Client Quote

When managing a tour in India a client asked me if the elephant they were riding was Indian or African. While I politely told her the answer I also suggested she may want to book a Titan tour to Africa so that she could compare the difference. (Company man through & through).

Favourite Attraction to Receive Maximum Client Reaction

There are so many favourite attractions...however there are different client reactions. The Killing Fields in Cambodia attract maximum client reaction in respect of how they see how pointless the war years were in the 70's in Cambodia. The Taj Mahal and tigers of Ranthambore for sheer wonderment as I mentioned earlier, and finally helicopter trips over New York and Niagara Falls, and of course maximum client reaction is finding that they have a crazy, happy, Geordie as their Tour Manager!

I am a mature person who loves variety, people, travel, freedom and learning new things - so feel very suited to the job.   My family sees me as a bit scatty but as soon as I pin on my badge I like to think I am transformed into an organized professional believing there is no problem which cannot be solved on tour provided you treat people with respect. I am told I always seem calm even under difficult circumstances and like to think clients relax on their holiday because they trust me.  I am hopeless at telling jokes as I never remember the punch line but love being made to laugh so the comedians in the group have a ready audience!

    Favourite Titan Tour

I am often asked this question which I find difficult to answer.  My favourite Titan tour is a successful one.  Destinations I have found fascinating are VietnamThe Galapagos Islands and Japan as they are so different. New Zealand is well worth the epic flight and Africa with its people, wildlife, scenery and music is just a wonderful experience.

My luckiest break was to get an interview with Titan Travel, pass their daunting selection process and exams and to end up sharing all my experience with so many happy customers in what must be one of the most rewarding vocations available in terms job satisfaction.

    Favourite Titan Tour

This has to be one of the most difficult choices as there are so many wonderful places that I travel to but I think that Titan's Best of Australia just clinches the number one spot. Through family ties I have always had a special affinity with this country which is an advantage when guiding customers around the inspiring scenery and fascinating history that Australia has in such abundance. This tour without doubt comprehensively encapsulates all this with its carefully crafted itinerary.

    Special Interests

Needless to say travel comes right near the top of my list so too does history and geography. Outside this then I love motorsport, sailing, skiing and golf plus long countryside walks and restoring classic cars (I'm now on my 4th project - a V8 MG). Having had a Mum who was a top London chef, cooking always comes up on my list as I find it very relaxing. I also write a great deal and regularly provide articles to a number of business traveller websites.

    4. Plan sensibly - it's better to list a fewer things to see and then do these thoroughly which is always very satisfying
