The delights of the Costa Verde, the beautiful coastline named for the verdant countryside that adjoins it, remains relatively undiscovered by the many visitors who flock to Portugal each year. Yet it is a region full of interest, giving the country its language and first nurturing the fortified wine with which Portugal has become synonymous.
We spend two full days exploring the historic and scenic highlights of the Costa Verde before embarking on a sumptuously luxurious cruise along the Douro. Our river journey begins and ends in Porto, where Port wine, harvested from the Douro’s ubiquitous terraced vineyards, is bottled and exported.
