    Madeira Holidays

Situated around 300 miles north of the Canary Islands, Madeira is often called the 'Pearl of the Atlantic'. Part of Portugal, it is easy to see why it has become a popular destination for those on ocean cruises in Europe.

This stunning island, which is actually part of an archipelago, features craggy coastlines and breathtaking volcanic landscapes, not to mention historic cities and glorious weather.

Visitors will have plenty to explore in port towns like Funchal and Porto Moniz, while the splendid natural beauty further inland will help to ensure that holidays to Madeira will not soon be forgotten.

Our itineraries are full of interesting guided tours that will explain the most popular sights, as well as the hidden gems. Of course, you'll also have plenty of time to get out and explore on your own.

    The cities of Madeira

Visitors on holidays to Madeira will have plenty of opportunity to explore the culture and history of the island and one of the best places to start is Funchal, which has been the capital for some 500 years.

Popular attractions in Funchal include the cathedral, which was built in the 15th century, as well as the Convento de Santa Clara, which features religious art and centuries-old architecture.

Other popular destinations for those on holidays to Madeira include the village of Santana with its charming A-frame houses houses and banana plantations, as well as Camara de Lobos, Cabo Girao and San Vicente.

    Mountains, lakes and rivers

With an island tour of Madeira, you'll discover that there's far more to this stunning island than beautiful beaches - as if that weren't enough!

Winding roads will take you past charming houses and through dense forest, high into the mountains. From the top of Pico Ruivo - the tallest point on Madeira - you will enjoy inspiring views of the valleys below and you may even get a chance to spot some of the beautiful wildflowers that the region is famous for.

If you fancy a walk in the great outdoors, you may want to consider following one of the levadas - or aqueducts - that were built in the 16th century to supply water to the southern parts of the island.

The Levada do Canical, for example is a popular walking route that stretches the seven miles between Marocos and Canical. There are also longer and more difficult trails along other levadas for more intrepid travellers to try.

    Madeira Flower Festival holidays

Those on holidays to Madeira in the spring are in for a real treat when the colourful blossoms begin to bloom and the entire island celebrates a festival of flowers.

In Funchal, the streets become a vibrant showcase of bright petals, as a magical parade with giant floats decorated with flowers travels through the city accompanied by dancers, singers and children in costume.

Other events include building the Wall of Hope from flowers placed by children, as well as various contests, concerts and street performances.
