The great lakes of Italy are justly renowned for their beauty - Lake Maggiore, Mediterranean in climate and dotted with exquisite islands; crystal clear Lake Garda, edged with chic resorts and extravagant mansions; and tranquil, splendid Lake Como, described by William Wordsworth as ‘a treasure which the earth keeps to itself’.
We explore the lake today, one of the largest and possibly the most stunning, as we depart Stresa for the Borromean Islands, visiting three of the four. Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori are the most famous, as the former is home to the spectacular 17th century Palazzo Borromeo and the latter, as the name Fisherman’s Island suggests, still exudes some of its fishing village atmosphere. Isola Madre is the largest of the Borromean Islands and known for its gardens.
