This region is unique, being home to one of the most extensive selections of churches and monasteries dating back to the Byzantine Empire. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ayios Nikolaos tis Stegis, one of the most highly prized painted churches on the island. Explore Kykko Monastery, which shelters many important holy relics including the icon of the Virgin Mary painted by St. Luke.
Witness Mount Olympus, the highest point on the island, where you can see the majestic ‘pinus nigra’ (black pine) trees that only grow above 3,937 feet.

Discover the Cathedral of St. John and the Byzantine Museum with its unique collection of icons, or marvell at the Venetian walls surrounding the old part of the city.
