Make your way independently to the airport and fly to Delhi. Arrive on day 2 and transfer to the 4-star Holiday Inn for a two-night stay. This afternoon is free for you to absorb the incredible mixture of vibrant sights and smells that compete with the hubbub of the city’s lively streets, or we suggest taking an optional excursion to see the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Qutab Minar, a remarkable 12th century tower and India’s most-visited monument. At the foot of the 73m-high tower of victory is Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque, the first mosque to be built in India.
Day 3 New Delhi
This morning join our guided tour of New Delhi, passing some of the impressive Raj-era architecture designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in the early 20th century, such as India Gate, a grand war memorial likened to the Arc-de-Triomphe, and vast Rashtrapati Bhavan, official residence of the Indian President. We also visit Humayun’s Tomb, an extravagant tomb commissioned by his widow to honour of the young Mughal Emperor, taking 14 years to complete and allow him to finally rest!
Day 4 Jaipur
We leave Delhi this morning for the journey to the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. Check in to the 4-star Golden Tulip Hotel for a two-night stay. The rest of the day is at leisure for you to explore the colourful, chaotic streets of this flamboyant city. We recommend finding the distinctive Hawa Mahal, a honeycombed hive of spectacular proportions in pink sandstone known also as the Palace of the Winds. Look out for the swarms of motorbikes and rickshaws careering along the roads!
Day 5 Amber Fort
Today we take an excursion into the hills surrounding the city to see the remarkable Amber Fort. The apparent forbidding walls enclose a stunning red sandstone palace complex, adorned with marble, mirrors, murals and precious stones. For this afternoon we recommend an optional tour of the impressive City Palace. Once the Maharaja’s residence, it is still the residence of royal descendants however part of it is now a fascinating museum, exhibiting art, armoury and the royal wardrobe collection. The excursion also includes the 18th century Jantar Mantar observatory, holding unusual astronomical instruments.
Day 6 Bharatpur
Leave Jaipur this morning, stopping at Deeg Palace - an exquisite royal summer palace, built in 1772, which still contains the furniture and objets d'art of the Bharatpur royal family who resided here until 1951. The palace is set among lovely gardens and fountains, considered second only to the Taj Mahal in beauty. From here, continue to Bharatpur for an overnight stay at the 3-star Hotel Udai Vilas Palace.
Day 7 Agra
Today is a day for those with an interest in bird and animals species! Rise early this morning for a trip to Keoladeo National Park. A guided rickshaw ride will take you through one of Asia’s finest bird sanctuaries, where more than 380 resident and migrant bird species have been recorded. It is also an excellent place to watch mammals like striped hyenas, jungle cats and wild boar. We return to the hotel for breakfast, before leaving for Agra and the 4-star Clarks Shiraz Hotel. There is no better way to enjoy your last evening than watching the sun set over one of the world’s most beautiful icons - the magnificent Taj Mahal - a ‘love poem in marble’ from the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to his third wife Mumtaz Mahal. We visit this iconic sight at sunset, when the light of the day can have a profound effect on your experience.
