Today we cruise along the world’s busiest artificial waterway, the Kiel Canal. This feat of engineering links the North Sea and the Baltic.
Day 4 - Aabenraa, Denmark - Cruising Aabenraa Fjord and Als Fjord
This morning we arrive in Aabenraa and due to the smaller size of Braemar we are able to cruise straight into the heart of the city, unlike many other ships. Disembark to discover the small, yet fascinating city centre home to beautifully preserved areas, charming buildings and impressive monuments such as Brundlund Castle - built in 1411 by Queen Margaret I and rebuilt in 1807, this beautiful landmark is now home to the Brundlund Slot Art Museum - and the spectacular St Nikolai Church. Late this afternoon we set sail to cruise along Aabenraa Fjord and also Als Fjord, which divides the Als and Jutland peninsulas - this beautiful 10 kilometre long fjord slices through the organic landscapes of the Danish countryside.
Day 5 - Fredericia
Fredericia, having been founded in 1650 by Frederick III, has a wealth of fascinating history to explore from magnificent structures to grand statues which reflect the town’s medieval and military past. Visit the spectacular Prince’s Gate, a narrow stone-built gate which until 1925, worked as the main gateway to the town; the Old Town Hall, home to ancient buildings and a number of fascinating monuments; and the grand Foot Soldier statue.
Day 6 - Hundested - Copenhagen (overnight)
Early morning arrival in Hundested, a beautiful small town located in the far eastern district of Denmark and surrounded by three sides of water. It’s the perfect destination for some tranquil down time with its pretty harbour housing charming boats and picturesque beaches. Its quiet atmosphere mixed with interesting attractions - including the pretty fishing village of Kikhavn, home to traditional farmhouses and a delightful harbour - also makes it the ideal place for a relaxing leisurely stroll. Early this afternoon we set sail once more, passing the stunning fairytale Kronborg Castle - Denmark’s most iconic Renaissance castle and the place where Shakespeare set Hamlet. We arrive in Copenhagen late tonight and dock for the night.
Day 7 - Copenhagen
We wake up in Denmark’s cosmopolitan capital, Copenhagen. Renowned for its collection of colourful buildings lining the lively waterfront, vibrant atmosphere, historic monuments and fantastic attractions, Copenhagen makes an enjoyable experience no matter what time of year it is visited. Discover these, including the Christianborg and Amelienborg Palaces and the iconic Little Mermaid sculpture. To get a taste for Copenhagen’s delightful history visit the 17th century waterfront and canal of Nyhavn, home to brightly-coloured townhouses dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, many of which have been renovated into charming bars and restaurants which line the historic harbour decorated with beautiful wooden shops.
Day 8 - Cruising Limfjorden - Aalborg
This morning we cruise along Limfjorden - beautiful shallow waters home to stunning valleys, historic harbours and magnificent coastal cliffs - for our early arrival into Aalborg, known as the ‘Paris of the North’ for its picturesque appearance and friendly atmosphere. This charming city consists of historic architecture including Aalborghus Castle - ‘the castle that doesn’t look like a castle’ famous for its unusual half-timbered appearance - and the 14th century, Gothic Budolfi Cathedral.
