Day 2 - Koblenz - Lorelei Rock - Rüdesheim
Early this morning we arrive in Koblenz, where you will have free time to make your own discoveries. Perhaps take a stroll through the historic city centre and to Deutsches Eck (German Corner) at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, or visit the impressive 19th century Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. We leave this afternoon and enjoy a leisurely cruise through the UNESCO-listed Middle Rhine Valley, passing the legendary Lorelei Rock in the Rhine Gorge, before reaching the pretty town of Rüdesheim this evening. Here we enjoy the traditional ‘Rhine in Flames’ festivities celebrating the local wines with spectacular firework displays and music. Once our experience of this spectacle of light is over, we set sail again later tonight.
Day 3 - Kehl
Our vessel docks in the German port of Kehl this afternoon, for an overnight stay. Lying just across the Rhine from the French city of Strasbourg, Kehl is an attractive town which dates back to the 11th century, and is linked by a bridge to its larger neighbour in Alsace. There will be free time to relax or explore on your own this evening.
Day 4 - Kehl (Strasbourg)
This morning, our included city tour of Strasbourg will introduce you to the highlights of this captivating city, taking in the European Parliament, the magnificent Gothic cathedral, the 18th century Palais de Rohan, once the opulent residence of the city’s bishops and Petite France - the charming UNESCO-listed Old Town, filled with half-timbered houses. We depart this afternoon.
Day 5 - Basel
Today we are in the Swiss city of Basel, which shares borders with both France and Germany and after breakfast we embark on a city tour. We will explore the medieval city centre, the Market Square, where stallholders sell a variety of fresh produce and local specialities daily, the bright red Rathaus, or Town Hall, dating from the 16th century, and the red sandstone cathedral. There will be free time in the Old Town before we return to the ship, and we set sail back downriver this evening.
Day 6 - Breisach
You have the whole morning to explore the German town of Breisach at your own pace today. Most of the town was destroyed by bombing during the Second World War, but it has since been painstakingly restored. Well worth visiting are the Gothic St Stephen’s Cathedral and the City History Museum, housed in a 17th century tower, with displays chronicling the town’s history from the Stone Age to the present day. Breisach is also an important centre of the local wine industry, and some cellars here offer wine tasting tours. We depart at midday, and for the remainder of the day you can simply relax on board and enjoy the scenery as we sail onwards.
Day 7 - Mainz
Mainz is one of Germany’s oldest cities, established as a Roman fortress more than 2,000 years ago, and this morning we will enjoy an included walking tour, visiting some of its most engaging attractions. We will call at the Romanesque St Martin’s Cathedral, which dates back to the 10th century, the 13th century Helig Geist Spital - one of Europe’s oldest hospital buildings - and the Gutenberg Museum, which houses a collection of rare early printed books produced by Mainz native Johannes Gutenberg. We leave early evening.
Day 8 Cologne - Folkestone
An early morning arrival back in Cologne, where, after breakfast, we disembark and board our waiting coaches, to take us on the return journey to Calais and a Eurotunnel or ferry crossing to Folkestone. Upon arrival at The Grand Hotel, you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
