Day 2 Salzburg
After breakfast we take a guided walking tour of old Salzburg, the historic city set against a backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery and overlooked by the fortress Hohensalzburg. Our musical theme begins today as we explore the city of Mozart’s birth and his house which is now a museum of his life and works. The cathedral, built between 1614 and 1655, is a fine example of the Baroque style and shows the last features of the Italian Renaissance; whilst the Getreidegasse is a lively shopping street adorned with wrought iron signs. The afternoon is free for further exploration. After dinner at the hotel, we enjoy a concert at the Marble Hall in Mirabell Palace or the Festung.
Day 3 - Salzburg - Passau
After breakfast, we leave for a tour of the ‘Sound of Music’ country taking in mountains, meadows, lakes and picturesque villages. We continue to St Gilgen, situated at the end of the Lake of St Wolfgang. We follow the shores of crescent-shaped Lake Mondsee and arrive at the historic town of Mondsee with its Benedictine Abbey. Later this afternoon we arrive in the old German city of Passau and embark our vessel (4T). We sail early evening, and tonight you are welcomed on board with the Captain’s welcome dinner.
Day 4 - Melk - Vienna
This morning we take a trip up the cliffside to Melk Abbey, an impressive Baroque complex with wonderful frescoes and a library stocked with medieval manuscripts that have been maintained by black-robed Benedictine monks for over nine centuries. Our excursion is complimented with a wine tasting. Later, you have the chance to take an optional excursion to see Vienna by night, or enjoy the Sound of Vienna.

An included guided tour this morning explores some of Vienna’s treasures - St Stephen’s Cathedral; the hard-working State Opera House; the elegant Parliament buildings and elaborate Town Hall. An optional tour to one of Austria’s most significant cultural monuments - Schönbrunn Palace, will complete your day. On this optional see the authentically furnished residential and ceremonial rooms of the Imperial Family, including the parlour in which 6-year-old Mozart used to play for the Empress, just a fraction of 1441 rooms that fill the Baroque façade, designed to rival French Versailles.
