Days 2-4 - At sea
Settle on board, as we sail towards Portugal.
Day 5 - Praia da Vitoria, Azores
Enjoy an afternoon in our first port of call - Praia da Vitoria. Once the capital of the Azores, it is now a vibrant modern town, set on a coastline that boasts a stunning natural harbour and beautiful sandy beaches, overseen by notable historic buildings including the impressive Fort of Santa Catarina, the last one of nine small bastions built to fend off pirates. The dominating 15th century Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz and stunning Town Hall are also worth seeing, and, as you explore, you are bound to spot numerous colourful impérios, temples devoted to the Holy Spirit.
Day 6 - Horta
Discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century, the pretty island of Faial became a popular stop for transatlantic yachtsmen, and understandably so. Much of the island is unspoilt, with beautiful lakes, sheer cliffs, lush valleys and dramatic craters. The tranquil port of Horta is just as picturesque, with lovely blue and whitewashed houses that earned the island the moniker ‘Blue Island’, and little Baroque churches. Most of the historic buildings in and around Horta have a religious significance, including the Jesuits College which now holds a museum focused on the last volcanic eruption on the island, in 1957. We sail late evening.
Day 7 - Ponta Delgada
São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores, was desirable to many nationalities for its geographic position between Europe and the Americas and its agricultural possibilities. There are many ways to spend your day, whether it’s admiring the high mountains, fertile hills and exotic shores of turquoise lakes, or taking to the sandy beaches and searching for whales. Ponta Delgada’s enchanting squares blend contemporary life with an historic flavour; the many fine buildings are a reminder of past. A day exploring the town could include the marvellous Renaissance Fortress, the Fortaleza de São Brás, and Praça 5 de Outubro (5th of October Square) where both the elegant Convento da Esperança (Hope Convent) and the Carlos Machado Museum, showcasing the island’s customs and traditions, are located.
Day 8 - At sea
Days 9-10 - Funchal, Madeira (overnight)
After having received much praise by the great Sir Winston Churchill, Funchal has become a popular destination for the British traveller, attracted by the year-round benign climate, the beautiful exotic gardens and its delicious wine - it is a tropical paradise with European comforts. Nature enthusiasts may be enthralled by the vibrant blooms throughout the city gardens or prefer to venture away from the capital and enjoy a hike along a choice of the numerous trails that snake through the many protected reserves, alive with endemic flora and wildlife. We arrive in the afternoon of day 9 and dock overnight, departing late evening on day 10 to allow plenty of time to enjoy Churchill’s retreat.
Day 11 - At sea
Day 12 - Lisbon, Portugal
Red tiled rooftops reflect the lines of the seven hills which provide Lisbon’s foundations, spreading from the banks of the River Tagus. The towers and domes of grand churches and palaces peak over the top of this charismatic capital, accessible by steep narrow lanes and old, quaint yellow trams. Attractions include St George Castle, home of Moorish royalty before being named for the patron saint of England by Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques. The city has many statues dedicated to religion and exploration including Cristo Rei Statue, a replica of Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer, and Discoveries Monument, depicting Prince Henry the Navigator leading several other notable Portuguese explorers, crusaders and monks from the prow of a huge vessel.
Days 13-14 - At sea
Two days to enjoy at sea as we sail towards Southampton.
Day 15 Southampton
