Days 2-4 - At sea
Day 5 - Praia da Vitoria, Azores
The vibrant town centre and gorgeous sandy beaches make pretty Praia da Vitoria a popular destination, the array of historic buildings and monuments holding interest throughout your day. There are still many marks left from the colonisation of this former capital of the Azores, the dominating 15th century Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz and stunning Paços do Concelho, adorning the town square, are a must for those interested in history and architecture. Those who prefer the beauty of nature may take this opportunity to visit Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz, a vast crater of the now extinct Monte Brasil volcano.
Day 6 - Horta
The small tranquil port of Horta stands on pretty Faial Island. The island’s volcanic origins have created a beautiful and unspoilt environment of craters, lakes, sheer cliffs and lush valleys, to which man has seemingly added only picturesque whitewashed houses and stately little Baroque churches. Taking a tour of the island will offer views of a hydrangea-filled, windmill-dotted Island, and Capelinhos, the volcano that rose from the sea in 1957, adding a strikingly beautiful western cape to the island over just 17 months.
Day 7 - Ponta Delgada
São Miguel, known as ‘The Green Island’, is the largest of the Azores, created by two volcanic massifs and draped in rolling forested hills and magnificent mountains, with beautiful lakes glistening amongst the folds. Ponta Delgada has a very cosmopolitan atmosphere despite it dating back over 500 years, and this mixes well with the many fine buildings that echo the fashions influenced by wealthy traders and explorers during the seafaring heydays. Enjoy the enchanting squares and parks, take an excursion inland to enjoy the enchanting mountain plains and the natural hot springs, or keep close to the ocean with a boat ride in search for whales and dolphins.
Day 8 - At sea
Days 9-10 - Funchal, Madeira (overnight)
We have two days to slowly inhale the stunning sub-tropical aroma of Madeira. The year-round benign climate guarantees gardens of vivid colour and forests full of life - botanists won’t need to stroll far from the ship with several of Funchal’s best parks and gardens close to the port. Keen bird watchers would appreciate a walk through the Laurel Forest, and many endemic species of flora and fauna thrive in the beautiful surroundings of the Levada of 25 Fontes, clinging to rugged rock faces where 25 waterfalls gush towards a magnificent emerald lagoon - one of nature’s greatest exultations.
Day 11 - At sea
Day 12 - Lisbon, Portugal
Spread out over seven hills on the north of the River Tagus, Lisbon is a delightful mix of palaces, churches, gardens, ancient castles and splendid bridges. This capital city has many fascinating museums, including the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the Carmo Archaeological Museum. It is also a shopper’s paradise and a treat to the taste buds, with delicious pastries to try with a cup of coffee. Bobbing along on the nearby Tagus Estuary is a delightful way to spend your afternoon, with beautiful scenes of medieval Lisbon and a sundry of aquatic birds await.
Day 13 - Leixões (for Porto)
Set on the banks of the River Douro, the UNESCO World Heritage City of Porto is truly beautiful, with pastel-fronted houses with red-tiled roofs, neo-classical buildings and wonderful Baroque churches. Famous for its port wine production, it is home to a host of renowned producers, and you are free to visit a port wine farm, set in the stunning Douro Valley, or find their cellars lining Porto’s waterfront at the end of a day discovering the city’s highlights.
Days 14-15 - At sea
