The Barge was superb with three decks. On top is a sun/viewing deck, well suited to waving regally, above a main deck with bar, lounge, free coffee /snack station and dining area which are all richly wood panelled. Dining tables for 8-10 people have upholstered "bench style" seats against the walls which were a bit low. We sat on comfy cushions.
Cabins with comfy single beds are grouped in clusters of four below, accessed by a few spiral steps. Food cooked on board is excellent and the one on shore dinner at a vineyard was good and not touristy. Service was excellent with attentive and very friendly staff.
The boat sails through several dams/locks for half of each day followed by an excursion on shore accompanied by a guide from the boat. It remains moored at night.
There was little other river traffic and we had by far the most elegant boat seen.

The poussada is luxurious and oozes atmosphere with cloisters, terrace, gardens and pool. Drinks on the terrace listening to the frogs croaking gives an idea of the ambience. The only negative comment was that we had buffet food rather than the a la carte menu available to other guests.

We had a difficult start with the strike of TAP and no flights out that day. We finally flew out the following day and we did loose a day on the beautiful Spirit of Chartwell which was really disappointing. Due to the strike 20 of our party cancelled leaving just 6 of us to continue with the holiday. We received 'star' treatment from the crew of the Spirit of Chartwell who did their utmost to make our stay really enjoyable. We also had a really good Titan Tour Manager with us, Janice Kilmurry, who went out of her way to ensure that we received the best service possible. She was with us from the delays at Gatwick and Heathrow right through to our stays on the Spirit of Chartwell, the Pousada and finally the journey home. Without her help throughout I'm sure the holiday would not have been so good. The weather was not good but that did not stop us from enjoying every aspect of the tour. We had a tour of the bridge with the Captain on the Spirit of Chartwell and the Chef showed us round the tiny kitchen where he and his assistant prepared wonderful food for us. The Chef also demonstrated a recipe which was very entertaining! We also had a history lesson on board which was very interesting.

The Pousada was very different - lovely old building with huge rooms. The bedroom was excellent - very large with a large bathroom. The food was buffet style but very good. Again the service was good and the guide we had for tours was excellent. Being only a very small party we were able to visit places where large tour buses could not go.

To sum up, excellent tour, thanks to the Tour Manager, and the crew of the Spirit of Chartwell. Very disappointed to have lost a complete day on board due the strike of the Portuguese airline - not the fault of Titan but a loss for us. Hence the score of 9 for Value for Money as we lost not only a day's cruise but also the proposed excellent lunch, dinner on the Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.

A few problems, not Titan's fault, but overall a pleasant holiday

There could not be a more perfect complement to a Douro River cruise on the Spirit of Chartwell than a stay at Pousada de Amares, a beautifully restored 12th century monastery, that became rich due to its Royal connection. Indeed, inside the imposing granite structure, one can see five statues of Kings of Portugal.

The Pousada’s enviable location is ideal for our included and optional excursions or activities such as bird watching, fishing and walks in the beautiful surrounding countryside. Or simply relax by the outdoor swimming pool.

The Pousada’s restaurant, the Convent’s Kitchen, serves fine local cuisine in an environment fit for a Queen. There are 32 air-conditioned rooms. Each room has a safe, mini-bar, bathrobes, hairdryer, desk, telephone and cable TV. The Pousada won a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor in 2012.

International flights from regional airports are available* or choose a free connecting flight to London, with home transfers all included.
