The awe-inspiring spectacle of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) has held watchers spellbound since the dawn of human history. Countless legends arose to explain these extraordinarily beautiful swirls of greens, yellows and reds shimmering against the night sky, from celestial dragons to the spirits of vanquished warriors. Knowing their scientific origin - as charged particles borne on solar winds to the earth’s magnetic pole - in no way detracts from their magnificence or modern-day appeal. Our fascinating voyage itinerary, set entirely within the Arctic Circle aboard an excellent Hurtigruten vessel, maximises the likelihood of experiencing this mesmerising phenomenon.
2 nights in Tromsø, 3 nights Hurtigruten voyage (accommodation as specified or similar)
Titan’s VIP door-to-door travel service collects you from home, for your journey to London Heathrow Airport and your scheduled Scandinavian Airlines flight to Tromsø, via Oslo. On arrival, we transfer to the Radisson Blu Hotel (4T). Dinner is served at the hotel this evening.
Day 2 - Tromsø
After breakfast this morning, we are taken on an orientation tour of Tromsø, the ‘Paris of the North’, situated at the same latitude as Siberia and Alaska. Tromsø is a town brimming with history and its location gives you a good chance of viewing the Northern Lights. After some free time, we are transferred in the late afternoon to embark our vessel (3T+), with time to settle in before dinner. We begin our voyage north, keeping our eyes to the skies as we pass through the waters towards Honningsvåg.
Day 3 - Honningsvåg (North Cape)
After breakfast this morning, we arrive in Honningsvåg where you may choose to join an optional excursion to mainland Europe’s most northerly point - the North Cape, a wild and windswept headland where the cliffs rise dramatically 300 metres from the sea. This afternoon we sail on, calling at some pretty fishing villages.
Day 4 - Kirkenes - Berlevåg
We arrive in the sheltered harbour of Kirkenes, close to the Sami communities of Northern Norway. This is a fascinating little town, allowing for a tantalising glimpse into life in this remote region of Norway. Whilst here, there is the opportunity to join an optional excursion to visit the amazing Snow Hotel, built in an idyllic surrounding near Gabba Reindeer Park. Our adventure continues this afternoon as we sail southwards, crossing Varangerfjord, a fabled bird-watching site. Our vessel hugs the coastline, visiting remote settlements, which rely on the Hurtigruten ships to maintain contact with the rest of Norway.
Day 5 Hammerfest - Tromsø
We sail along the beautiful leeward side of Magerøya Island to arrive in Honningsvåg in the early morning, then continue on to Hammerfest, Oksfjord and Skjervøy, before we arrive late at night in Tromsø, where we disembark and return to the Radisson Blu Hotel (4T) for the night.
Day 6 Tromsø - London
After a leisurely morning, we transfer to Tromsø Airport for our scheduled Scandinavian Airlines flight to London Heathrow, via Oslo. On arrival you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
• Daylight hours are short, especially since the entire itinerary is north of the Arctic Circle, and time of arrival at ports of call is subject to change. Whilst this is an excellent time to view the Northern Lights, we are unable to guarantee that they will be seen during this holiday.
• Whilst porterage is included at your hotel, we are unable to provide porterage at the port of Tromsø.
