MV Aegean Odyssey
Day 2 - Hydra
Visit this gem of an island, free of wheeled transport and a joy to wander around.
Day 3 - Santorini (Akrotiri)
The Minoan settlement of Akrotiri is a tour highlight; the excavations here have uncovered one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean, covered in pumice by a volcanic eruption in about 1625 BC. Walk amid the well-preserved streets and visit the ongoing excavations. You also visit Fira, the scenic capital, this afternoon. Ship to shore tender service.
Day 4 - Heraklion, Crete
Tour the Minoan Palace of Knossos, said to be the birthplace of the Minotaur. It was a magnificent palace complex, with flamboyant decoration, courts, audience chambers and residential areas, repeatedly damaged by earthquakes.
Day 5 - Rhodes
The next port of call is Rhodes with a chance to explore Rhodes Old Town and the Citadel of the Knights of St John. Many structures date to the era of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, who lived on the island from 1309 until 1522 when the Ottoman Empire finally dislodged the Knights. There is also a choice of tours to Rhodes town or the Acropolis at Lindos, a destination of both historic and scenic interest. At the summit of the Acropolis is the Doric Temple of Lindian Athena, an archaeological jewel dating from the 4th century BC.
Day 6 - Delos - Mykonos
This morning you visit the tiny, deserted island of Delos, with a tour including visits to the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Avenue of the Lions, and the Sacred Harbour. As the reputed birthplace of the god Apollo, Delos was once a principal religious and commercial centre of the Eastern Mediterranean, and the destination for many pilgrims. After lunch, visit Mykonos and enjoy an afternoon at leisure. Ship to shore tender service.
Day 7 - Patmos
Visit the small cave where St John received his revelation, the medieval village of Chora and the Monastery of St John the Theologian - together a UNESCO World Heritage Site that constitutes an exceptional example of a Greek Orthodox pilgrimage centre. Ship to shore tender service.
Day 8 - Kavala (Philippi)
After a view of the World Heritage-listed Mount Athos, as we cruise past, we visit the city of Philippi. Founded by (and named after) Philip of Macedonia in 356BC, we also see the stream where St Paul's first European convert to Christianity was baptised.
Day 9 - Thessalonica
There is a choice of excursions today. See Byzantine Thessalonica - the city is an open-air museum with Christian monuments dating from the 4th to the 21st century. Alternatively, a city tour allows you to enter the ancient walls of Thessalonica to discover its wondrous monuments.
Day 10 - Volos (Meteora)
Perhaps the highlight of any trip to Greece is the sight of the Byzantine monasteries built atop the rock towers of Meteora. These sandstone ‘columns in the sky’ soar up over a thousand feet above sea level and are crowned with monasteries, twenty four in total, built by anchorite monks from the 11th century onward.
Day 11 - Skiathos
There is time today on the ‘Mamma Mia’ island of Skiathos - perhaps enjoy a leisurely walk to explore. Ship to shore tender service.
Day 12 Piraeus - Athens - London
This morning you disembark Aegean Odyssey after breakfast and are transferred to Athens Airport for a flight to London Heathrow or Gatwick Airport. On arrival you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
