Day 2 Corfu Town
This morning we embark on a tour of Corfu Town, beginning at Patounis’ Soap Factory which has produced pure traditional soap, renowned for its disinfecting and healing properties, from locally produced olive products since 1891. From here we walk along the market halls to the UNESCO-listed Old Town, dominated by its impressive 16th century Venetian fortress, one of three created to defend the island from the Ottoman Empire. A guided walk will introduce you to the main attractions such as the Church of St Spyridon, the patron saint of Corfu who was credited with saving Corfu from famine, plagues and invasions. You have some free time to explore the town, before we return to the hotel with the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 3 The Scenic North
We spend today discovering the north of the island. Our first stop is Paleokastritsa, one of Corfu’s most beautiful old fishing villages and home to the Theotokou monastery. Founded in the 13th century and untouched for hundreds of years, it holds many old artefacts. We continue to Lakones at Bella Vista, to enjoy the magnificent views over Paleokastritsa and Corfu, before a scenic drive to Kassiopi where you may choose to spend your free time exploring the narrow streets and taking lunch. We return along a coastal road, providing wonderful views of the Albanian Mountains.
Day 4 Mouse Island - Achilleion Palace
Our morning excursion starts with a visit to Kanoni, where you can enjoy much-photographed views over Mouse Island (Pontikonissi). According to myths, this rocky island is actually the ship of Odysseus after being turned to stone by Poseidon and there may be time if you wish, to take a boat over for a visit. We continue to the Imperial palace of Achilleion, built by Elisabeth, the powerful Empress of Austria. It has been carefully restored to its former beauty, with beautiful gardens holding exceptional statues inspired by Greek mythology. Inside the palace you will see an abundance of art, again influenced by the inspiring legends, original furniture and personal items. We return to the hotel to spend the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 5 Agios Ioannis
After three busy days, you may like to spend today relaxing on the hotel’s private beach, or if you have the desire to explore further, an optional excursion is available to discover Corfu’s southern delights. Visit the villa of Mon Repos, a small but beautiful palace surrounded by magnificent parkland. This royal summer residence was the birthplace of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, and its museum holds many important historical documents. After time here, continue to the Folklore Museum of Messi in Sinarades, housing a great collection of traditional objects.
Day 6 Agios Ioannis
You have a second day to choose between a day of relaxing in resort and exploring the surrounding area, or taking an optional excursion. Perhaps take a boat trip to Albania, for a guided tour of the ancient site of Butrint. This UNESCO-listed site has been inhabited since prehistoric times and includes a theatre from 3rd century BC, an old school and Roman baths, plus a temple with mosaic floors. You will also visit the ruins of the once impregnable fortress of Ali Pasha, the local ruler. Alternatively, you may like to see mainland Greece, with a scenic drive passing the impressive mountains of Epirus and view some of the 24 Meteora ‘floating monasteries’. Built in the 15th century, six are still open to visitors. On the return, stop in Ioannina for a stroll through the charming old town. You may have the opportunity to take a boat to the small, unnamed island in the middle of Lake Pamvotis, shrouded in stories of Ali Pasha.
Day 7 Agios Ioannis
Today is completely free for you to enjoy at leisure.
Day 8 Agios Ioannis - Corfu - London
Today we travel to the airport for a direct, scheduled British Airways or Norwegian Air Shuttle flight to London Heathrow or Gatwick Airport. On arrival you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
