Experience the fairy-tale magic of Bavaria on this enchanting tour, following in the footsteps of the eccentric ‘Swan King’, Ludwig II, a man so obsessed with the legendary world of chivalrous knights and medieval romance that he built the spectacular Neuschwanstein Castle as an extravagant tribute to Wagner’s operatic heroes. You can also visit Ludwig’s other palaces, Herrenchiemsee, influenced by the design of the Palace of Versailles, and the smaller rococo-style Linderhof. There will be plenty of time to explore the sights of the vibrant Bavarian capital, Munich, and an opportunity to enjoy the expansive views from atop the Kitzbüheler Horn, just over the border in Austria.

Day 2 Munich
On today’s included guided tour of Munich you will be introduced to the highlights of Bavaria’s vibrant capital, including the Olympic Park, where the 1972 Olympic Games took place, the Residenz, once the city palace of Bavaria’s kings and Munich’s main public square, the Marienplatz, dominated by the Neo-Gothic New Town Hall with its famous glockenspiel featuring life-size human figures. In the afternoon you will enjoy a guided tour of the English Garden, one of the largest urban parks in the world, first laid out in 1789. There will be some free time before we meet this evening for dinner in a traditional Bavarian beer cellar.
Day 3 Neuschwanstein - Füssen
After breakfast we head out on a full-day excursion to visit what many regard as the most beautiful castle in the world, Neuschwanstein. Begun in 1869 as a private hideaway for the reclusive King Ludwig II, it was designed as a fantastical, fairly-tale palace, reflecting the King’s obsession with medieval legends and the operas of Richard Wagner. It was still unfinished when he died in mysterious circumstances in 1886. Inside, the highly ornate rooms are adorned with murals depicting kings, saints, poets and knights, including Siegfried and Lohengrin, the ‘Swan Knight’. After some leisure time we visit the lovely town of Füssen, at the southern end of the Romantic Road, with its Gothic castle and former monastery, both now housing art galleries.
Day 4 Munich
You are free to explore Munich at your own pace today. Alternatively, you could join one of our optional excursions to either Herrenchiemsee Palace, another of King Ludwig II’s extravagant residences, built on an island in Bavaria’s largest lake, Chiemsee, or the Baroque Nymphenburg Palace, once the summer residence of the Bavarian royal family.
Day 5 Linderhof Palace
Today we visit Linderhof Palace, built in the rococo style for King Ludwig II in the 1870s. Set in attractive landscaped gardens, the opulent interiors include a shimmering Hall of Mirrors, gigantic chandeliers and a wealth of gilt carvings and elaborate furnishings. Enjoy a stroll around the grounds, where you’ll find follies including the Moorish Kiosk, the Moroccan House and an artificial grotto, its design inspired by a scene from Wagner’s opera, ‘Tannhäuser’, featuring a swan-shaped boat.
Day 6 Munich
Today you are free to relax or make your own explorations. Otherwise, you might like to join our optional excursion to the Kitzbüheler Alps across the border in Austria, riding the gondola lift up to the Kitzbüheler Horn summit to enjoy magnificent views over the surrounding countryside. You can also wander down to the Alpine Flower Garden here, featuring more than 300 species of Alpine plants.
Day 7 Munich - London
After breakfast we transfer to Munich Airport for a direct, scheduled British Airways or Lufthansa flight to London Heathrow Airport. On arrival you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
