Day 2 - Magdeburg - Brandenburg
After time for early morning independent exploration of historic Magdeburg, or a leisurely morning on board, we depart for Brandenburg. Arriving mid-afternoon you may enjoy an independent stroll around the remains of the medieval city walls and gate towers, ascend the huge, metallic Friedenswarte for fabulous city views with the chance to recover in the surrounding park, or visit the Roland statue in front of the Gothic red-brick Town Hall, an oversized mythological knight with his sword drawn to symbolise Brandenburg’s independence in the Middle Ages. We remain here overnight.
Day 3 - Brandenburg - Potsdam
As we wake for the day, our vessel starts the journey to Potsdam, offering lovely scenes as you take a leisurely breakfast on board. Arriving during lunch, our afternoon starts with a walking tour of the city centre with tales of its eventful history. Potsdam has no less than 17 luxurious palaces surrounded by opulent parks, built by generations of royalty who were keen to take advantage of the city’s beautiful landscape. Highlights include the Dutch Quarter, the Old Town Hall and the Church of St Nicholas which dominate the Old Market Square. A coach transfers us back to the ship, where we remain in port overnight.
Day 4 - Potsdam - Berlin
After a leisurely cruise, we arrive in Berlin in time for an afternoon tour. This city will forever be shrouded with the infamous wall which divided the city and families for almost 30 years; however it has bounced back from this turbulent time with an unpretentious and creative attitude. We take an included tour to Checkpoint Charlie, one of the most important crossing points between East and West, as well as restored buildings including the prestigious Reichstag, the seat of the German Parliament, and Potsdamer Platz, the futuristic quarter built on land once divided by the Wall. We remain in port overnight.
Days 5-6 Berlin
Disembark and transfer to the Maritim Hotel Berlin (4T) for two days to explore this great city at leisure. Perhaps walk along the remnants of the Berlin Wall; visit the grand summer retreat of Charlottenburg Palace, where several royals lay at rest in the picturesque garden; visit one of the many history museums or see the memorials at Volkspark Friedrichshain; take in the world-renowned exhibitions on Museum Island; explore the old Nikolai Quarter; or maybe enjoy an evening at one of many theatres.
