Day 2 - Nuremberg
Choose the 'Tastes of Nuremberg' excursion, a tour of culinary delights that will encourage a passion for local bratwurst, beer and gingerbread; or explore the city’s WWII sites. Adolf Hitler once agreed with the mayor that Nuremberg is the ‘most German of German cities’. It became the city for huge Nazi Party rallies, held here annually from 1933 to 1938, parading through the old walled town in homage to their Führer. Hitler commissioned a vast stadium to be built southeast of the city centre and the unfinished building is home of the Documentation Centre Nazi Party Rally Grounds, an exhibition on the causes and consequences of the Nazi efforts. Following the war, the city became the site of the Nuremberg War Crimes Tribunal, when former Nazis were tried in Courtroom 600.
Day 3 - Regensburg
Join the group for an enjoyable walk around Regensburg, a Roman settlement that became Bavaria’s first capital, the residence of dukes, kings and bishops. This predominantly medieval town boasts an incredible 1,500 listed buildings. You may prefer to hop on a local ferry and sail through the beautiful Danube Gorge to view historic Weltenburg Abbey, the oldest monastery in Bavaria in a spectacular setting. It is home of one of the oldest monastic breweries in the world and you can sample their award-winning dark ale on your visit. Alternatively, you could take a leisurely cycle on your own to the Walhalla monument with your Tailormade GPS device. Modelled on the Parthenon, the marble busts in this ‘temple of fame’ honour prominent German figures.
Day 4 - Passau - Linz
Take an excursion to the medieval Czech town of Cesky Krumlov. This World Heritage-listed city is a small, yet outstanding example of a European medieval town, with an old town square enclosed by Renaissance and Baroque buildings, and overlooked by a striking Renaissance castle. Or journey to Salzburg and explore the birthplace of Mozart, and the city backdrop for the film ‘The Sound of Music’. The skyline of this picturesque destination is dominated by churches, castles and palaces. Discover the city’s Baroque ornamentation, history and huge cultural influence.
Day 5 - Melk - Dürnstein
Be guided through Melk’s magnificent 18th century Benedictine Abbey. The grand interior displays exhibitions of religious art, while the abbey church is adorned with an abundance of gold, marble and colourful murals. Alternatively, embark on an enjoyable guided bike ride along the river from Melk to one of the most enchanting villages in the region, Dürnstein. Its ruined castle is where Richard the Lionheart was held captive, after being captured on his return from the Third Crusade. As the day ends, take in the fine views of the breathtakingly beautiful Wachau Valley while enjoying a sundowner.
Day 6 - Vienna
Take a trip to the beautiful, Baroque Schönbrunn Palace to witness the sheer opulence of the Habsburg Empire. The countless chambers of this imperial palace are decorated with priceless furnishings and art. It is still used today as the location of official state receptions. Alternatively, visit the world-renowned Spanish Riding School and either tour the stables or see the famous Lipizzaner Stallions perfecting their skills during their morning exercise programme in the magnificent Winter Riding Hall, which has all the grandeur of a palace ballroom. Alternatively, take a guided tour of Bratislava, a town that prospered on a major trade route for centuries before earning the title of Slovakia’s capital. History lovers will not be disappointed with the city walls, the vast range of architecture and evidence of its bold, 40-year communist era. Later today, breathe in the opulence and luxury of Palais Liechtenstein, an architectural jewel in the heart of Vienna, while enjoying a glass of fine Austrian Sekt. Then be enthralled by an enchanting private Viennese evening concert featuring the timeless music of Strauss and Mozart.
Day 7 - Budapest
Spend today in Budapest, one of Europe’s oldest and prettiest cities. On a guided tour of this city, you are constantly reminded of both its opulent past, and the troubled times of WWII and the 1956 uprising. Explore the elegant boulevards and faded grandeur of a capital that has retained much of its individuality, before sitting down for a piano concert. You may prefer to relax and unwind at the Thermal Baths and Spa (almost 125 thermal springs surface across Budapest), or you can choose to experience the labyrinths of the Hospital in the Rock, a relic of WWII and the 1956 uprising, built within a natural cave system. Beginning life as an Air Raid Control Centre and refuge in the 1930s, the hospital was developed within the caverns for Hungarian soldiers and civilians.
Day 8 Budapest - London
After breakfast we disembark our ship and transfer to Budapest Airport for a direct, scheduled British Airways flight to London Heathrow Airport, where you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle for the journey home.
