Days 2-4 - At sea
Day 5 - Cartagena, Spain
Cartagena has been an important city for over 2,000 years but has not allowed itself to become stuck in its past. Many of the buildings from the city’s Roman history have disappeared, but some important sites have been found hidden under buildings including the amphitheatre, dating from around 100 BC and discovered just 30 years ago. There are many more sites to explore, including Concepción Castle - a fortress for the Carthaginians, Visigoths, Arabs and Castilians, and several Modernist buildings created by the pupils of Antoni Gaudi.
Day 6 - At sea
Day 7 - Palermo, Sicily
Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish, Austrians and others have contributed to Sicily’s epic history and culture. Each empire has left its imprint upon a city of weathered monuments and lively markets. Take a leisurely stroll or an organised excursion through the city and you may come across many buildings of faded grandeur - splendid theatres and churches - Cappella Palatina is a particularly elaborate example, decorated with gold mosaics and precious gems. The adjoining and equally spectacular Palazzo dei Normanni, the former Royal Palace, is now, in part, the seat of the local parliament.
Day 8 - Amalfi, Italy - cruising Amalfi Coast & Capri
In the heart of Italy’s glorious Amalfi Coast, at the foot of the imposing Mount Cerreto, sits the stunning, UNESCO-listed town of Amalfi. Fill your day here meandering through the wonderful network of narrow streets lined with historic structures and an array of fantastic cafés to the striking 9th century Cattedrale di Sant’Andrea and the magnificent Moorish-style Cloister of Paradise, where many of Amalfi’s most important medieval citizens, plus the relics of St Andrew the Apostle, are buried. The town could also be the base for discovering the world-famous coastline, with renowned towns such as Ravello set high into the landscape, not far away. Late this afternoon we return to our ship for a cruise along the beautiful coastline.
Day 9 - Civitavecchia (Rome)
Early this morning we dock in Civitavecchia to make the journey into Rome, a city that has been a favourite destination for millennia. From the Colosseum and Forum of Ancient Rome to the city's great masterpieces of Renaissance and Baroque art and architecture, the emblems of past grandeur and wealth provide a grandiose backdrop for the elegant designer boutiques, pavement cafés and sophisticated pleasures of today's vibrant capital. Walking tours are available to add a narrative to the famous fountains and Roman monuments.
Day 10 - Sorrento
Sorrento boasts an enviable position on the Amalfi Coast, overlooking the Bay of Naples, fabled Capri Island and notorious Mount Vesuvius. Spend today exploring the town’s Roman structures, with two medieval palaces and a 16th century cathedral offering a glimpse of the finer life in centuries gone by, or view Il Vallone dei Mulino, an incredible, deep mountain cleft created by a volcanic eruption some 35,000 years ago. Alternatively, take the opportunity of an unforgettable excursion to Herculaneum or Pompeii. Ship to shore tender service.
Day 11 - Olbia, Sardinia
Situated near Sardinia’s fashionable Costa Smeralda holiday resort, Olbia is often overlooked but, if you are not tempted by the millionaire’s paradise, Olbia is well worth discovering. This ancient city has an plethora of fine historic structures such as the beautiful 11th century Basilica of San Simplicio and the Church of St Paul Apostle, as well as a number of fascinating archaeological sites from as far back as 2000 BC - the fortress-like Nuraghe Riu Mulinu will fuel the imagination.
Days 12-13 - At sea
Day 14 - Portimao, Portugal
Portimao is our last port of call, offering a day of relaxation on a beautiful beach, a rocky coastline to explore and plenty of shops. Fish restaurants are in abundance, a nod to the sardine fishing industry which has fed the town since pre-Roman times.
Days 15-16 - At sea
