Day 5 - Cádiz, Spain
Today you can appreciate one of the oldest towns of Western Europe - Cádiz. Its past can be seen in the Old Town’s ancient stone walls that bind the maze of courtyards. Of the countless watchtowers that once dominated the skyline, 127 still remain and some are still accessible, including one of the bell towers of the beautifully carved Plaza de la Catedral, where you can enjoy a unique view of the distinctive burnt orange cupola. The beautiful cities of Jerez and Seville are within easy reach for a day trip. We sail late evening.
Day 6 - Málaga
The finest Moorish buildings are found in Andalucia, including the vast Alcazaba of Málaga, which is slowly being restored to its regal Moorish magnificence. You may choose instead to take an excursion to Granada for the opportunity to see the impressive Alhambra, whose proud 14th century palaces and exotic gardens are Spain's greatest expression of Moorish art. Staying in Málaga will offer opportunities to see the Roman Theatre, Gibralfaro Castle and museums dedicated to Picasso, the city’s treasured son. We depart late evening.
Day 7 - Melilla, Spanish-Morocco
We have our first taste of the African continent today in Melilla. The Spanish exclave has an abundance of history and architectural delights. Take a tour along the steep cobblestoned streets of the Old Town and visit the numerous museums in the perfectly-preserved multi-level medieval fortress that juts out into the sea, or head to the new quarters, packed with Modernist façades that have made this city second only to Barcelona in Spain’s Modernist movement, with many designed by Gaudi’s disciple, Enrique. We sail this evening.
Day 8 - Cartagena
Enjoy a full day in Cartagena today. Although many of the buildings from Roman Cartagena have disappeared, there are still many important sites to discover and explore today, including the incredible Roman Theatre and Concepción Castle, with incredible panoramic views over the beautiful bay and maze of cobbled alleys. You can also find several Modernist buildings created by students of Antoni Gaudi.many designed by Gaudi’s disciple, Enrique. We sail this evening.
Day 9 - Gibraltar
There are two ways to see Gibraltar today - as a pretty, tiny British peninsula that is home to a diverse population, the famous Rock, bold Barbary Macaques and St Michael’s Cave; or as an incredible fortress, with a chain of bastions along the coast protecting the Rock’s labyrinth of tunnels, weaving for an impressive 32 miles inside the three mile long territory. Take time to enjoy Gibraltar’s natural beauty or delve into The Great Siege Tunnels to learn of its strategic importance and of life underground.
Day 10 - Casablanca, Morocco
As Morocco’s capital, Casablanca is more open to Western ways than other places in Morocco, with chic bars, stylish restaurants and contemporary art galleries; however the crowded streets of the Old Medina or Quartier Habous hold a strong grasp on the city’s heritage. The Jewish Museum offers a fascinating insight into Morocco’s ancient Jewish community, and is the only one of its kind in the Islamic world. Dominating all this is the phenomenal Hassan II Mosque, its minaret is the tallest in the world, soaring 210 metres with a laser beam pointing the way to Mecca at night. Our ship departs late evening.
