Day 4 Boxing Day - Plitvice Lakes
Our destination today is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Plitvice Lakes. En route we break our journey at the village of Rastoke, where two rivers meet, generating enough power for a number of attractive watermills. Some of these are still in working order, creating lovely images within the beautiful landscape in which they are set. Plitvice Lakes National Park itself is an extraordinary complex of sixteen emerald-green lakes and pools, which, fed by the Korana River and other smaller streams, allow the waters to flow from one lake to the next forming a spectacular display of waterfalls and cascades. We return to Zagreb in the evening, where dinner is included at a local restaurant.
Day 5 Varaždin
We journey this morning, to the lovely baroque town of Varaždin, referred to by some as Croatia’s ‘Little Vienna’. A city of music, history and flowers, the town’s rich culture mixed with the baroque palaces, churches and monasteries make it a joy to explore. Varaždin Cemetery is one of the most beautiful in Europe. We return to the hotel, where the afternoon is free. Our final dinner this evening will be at a local restaurant.
