Day 2 - Budapest
A tour of Budapest introduces you to what is often referred to as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Buda, the intermittent capital of Hungary, helped to secure its status by becoming the country’s largest city through unifying with Óbuda and Pest. It is now the political, commercial and cultural centre of Hungary, famed for its café culture and the 118 geothermal springs that have been enjoyed since the 2nd century. The city has a wealth of wonderful places to visit from the Baroque Royal Palace to the Neo-Gothic Parliament, the gorgeous City Park with its replica of a Transylvanian castle and Buda Castle Hill’s charming buildings including decorative Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church, which has played a prominent part in the city’s history. You may also have the opportunity to spend your leisure time watching a performance at the magnificent Opera House.
Day 3 - Budapest - Esztergom
Continue independent explorations of the capital this morning or take an excursion to admire the elegant Gödöllö Palace, including a horseshow. The largest baroque palace in Hungary was a favourite of Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), who was offered the palace as a gift on her coronation as Queen of Hungary in 1867. The palace has seen less opulent times, used as a station for Soviet troops and as a home for the elderly before being renovated into the masterpiece it is today. It boasts a beautiful Grand Hall resplendent in white and gold, a baroque theatre and a large park with a riding school. We continue to Esztergom, a small town that played a large part in the establishment of Hungary as the birthplace of the country’s first king, St Stephen, in 975, and then later as the royal seat for two centuries. We take an included walk of the city this afternoon that includes the cathedral, Hungary’s largest church. We return to the city for an evening concert.
Day 4 - Bratislava
After breakfast, enjoy a tour of Bratislava including a guided walk through the old town’s pastel-hued pedestrian streets. This afternoon is free to explore at leisure or join an excursion to visit the vast Habsburg Imperial Summer Residence - Castle Hof. The Palace is a glorious mix of grandeur and rural beauty, with magnificent rooms, once renowned as the setting for opulent court festivities, restored to their original splendour. It sits amidst 120 acres of land, with gently descending terrace gardens, elaborate baroque gardens and its own estate farm.
Day 5 - Vienna
Awake this morning in Vienna, where we take a city tour after breakfast. Famous for the opulent Spanish Riding School that has trained beautiful Lipizzaner horses for 450 years, the exquisite vocals of the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the great number of composers who were born or lived in the city, there is much here to impress and mesmerise today. Our tour includes a private concert in a Viennese Palais.
This afternoon, you may choose to visit Schönbrunn Palace, one of Austria’s most significant cultural monuments. See a selection of the 1441 rooms that fill the palace, including the parlours and apartments of Sisi, who married the Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria before she earned her regal position in Hungary. Subject to availability, you may also have the opportunity to purchase tickets for a performance at the Vienna State Opera or Volksoper Vienna.
Day 6 - Krems - Melk/Emmersdorf
We start today’s included explorations in Krems an der Donau, one of the country’s oldest cities, with a city walk and wine tasting session, highlighting a tradition that has lasted over a millennia. Our afternoon is spent on an excursion to Melk Abbey. Originally a palace, this impressive gold-hued building holds an ideal location on a promontory over the Danube. The palace was presented to Benedictine monks 900 years ago, who turned it into a magnificent fortified abbey dedicated to education. The Imperial Staircase, domed entrance gate, library and Marble Hall, decorated with exquisite ceiling paintings of mythological scenes complete an outstanding interior.
Day 7 - Linz
From the shores of Linz, we take a full day excursion to Salzburg, a city as beautiful as its setting, with scenes recognisable from the Sound of Music film. Our tour includes Mozarthaus, where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. Now a museum, it displays keepsakes and instruments from the great composer’s childhood. We also experience a slice of Salzkammergut, a spectacular region of alpine covered hills and tranquil lakes. Back aboard our vessel we enjoy the Captain‘s Gala Dinner and a farewell concert befitting of the occasion.
Day 8 Passau - Munich - London
After breakfast we transfer to Munich Airport for our direct, scheduled British Airways flight to London Heathrow, where you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.
