Day 3 - Cruising Limfjorden - Aalborg, Denmark
Glide through the tranquil, shallow waters of Limfjord, one of Denmark’s most famous fjords, with an abundance of beautiful landscapes - undulating lush valleys, pretty islands, picturesque harbours and coastal cliffs, as you sail deep into the heart of Denmark. Arrive in the charming city of Aalborg after lunch to explore well preserved medieval landmarks such as the 14th century cathedral and the understated half-timbered Aalborghus Castle, alongside cafés, bars, galleries and modern museums. A market of Christmas cabins, decorated with trees and lights, fill the town centre with Christmas cheer.
Day 4 - Copenhagen
With its vibrant, friendly atmosphere, wonderful culture and beautiful architecture, Copenhagen is a Scandinavian haven, especially at Christmas. The narrow, cosmopolitan streets, lined with colourful shops and places to eat, are always busy with welcoming locals. Many of Copenhagen’s most interesting attractions are either within the city centre or just a short walk away, including historic Christianborg Palace and The Little Mermaid sculpture at Langelinje Pier. The Christmas Market at Tivoli Gardens is arguably one of the most popular in Denmark, the fairytale park lending perfectly to the festive atmosphere. In the glow of over 500,000 fairy lights, find stalls selling porcelain and traditional sweaters, gløgg and apple pancakes. A visit to Kronborg Castle seamlessly combines history with Christmas, Renaissance rooms are elegantly decorated and a stunning quality market sits within the courtyard. The colourful waterfront is a lovely destination with cafés, galleries and museums lining the bank, and provides beautiful backdrop to a wonderful Christmas market with genuine handmade items.
Day 5 - Wismar, Germany
This morning we visit Wismar, one of Northern Germany’s prettiest and most historic destinations, world-renowned for its fine examples of Gothic brick structures, wonderful gable houses and charming Market Square. Today, the scent of cinnamon, vanilla and gingerbread draw you into the large square, holding a beautiful Christmas Market that offers a rich selection of Christmas goods and gifts, tree decorations, toys, wooden handicrafts and candles. Wismar’s Bürgerpark is the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing stroll, or discover fine views from the top of the park’s tower.
Day 6 - Hamburg
We travel through the night on the Kiel Canal to reach the River Elbe by morning and sail along the pretty waterway to Hamburg. Our afternoon is free to enjoy the festive atmosphere in this impressive Hanseatic city. You are spoilt with the choice of markets - to name just a few, the church of St Petri, one of Hamburg’s oldest, has an enchanting advent village of fir-decorated wooden huts; the Town Hall is a magnificent backdrop to woodcarvers, gingerbread bakers and silversmiths selling their creations on Rathausmarkt; or the dazzling white magic of modern Jungfernstieg is reflected in the lake, around which wealthy families used to promenade on a Sunday to introduce their unmarried daughters. The largest market covers Gerhard-Hauptmann-Platz, Spitalerstrasse and Mönckebergstrasse with numerous attractions and over 150 stalls filled with an endless variety of unusual gifts, accompanied by the delicious aroma of roasted chestnuts and cinnamon stars.
